Holiday Music was a collaborative music group that came together for a week or so every year between 2001 - 2010 to record a holiday themed record to give to friends and family.
Holiday Music was Barry Phipps with Mark Janka and Tim Joyce of The Lesser Birds of Paradise, joined by their musical friends. The recordings were made at Barry's old North Branch Recording Studio in Chicago, IL.
About two weeks before Christmas, Barry would invite Tim and Mark to the studio and make up songs on the spot that were about or inspired by the holiday season. Some were funny, some were instrumentals, some were old standards worked into a new arrangement.
Close to 50 musicians played on the recordings over the ten year span, including Jon Langford, Edith Frost, Azita, Kelly Hogan and others. Musicians who consistently played over the years and became essential to the sound of these recordings were Ryan Neuschafer (who also engineered alongside Barry), Pramod Tummala, Chris Erin, Darren Garvey and Eric Bandurski.
The records were recorded, mixed, mastered and manufactured within a one or two week period. Most were released on The Tight Ship label. These cds are no longer available, but Tight Ship Records is pleased to offer these records for free, as they were originally intended, both through streaming and digital download.
